Arsenal have become \u201calso-rans\u201d and find themselves going \u201cbackwards\u201d, says Paul Merson, with the Gunners urged to replace Unai Emery with either Mauricio Pochettino or Brendan Rodgers.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

There has been plenty of speculation regarding who will be handed a rescue job at Emirates Stadium.<\/p>\n

Emery has been moved out of a prominent post in north London, a matter of days after Pochettino was shown to the door at arch-rivals Tottenham.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

It has been suggested that the Argentine should be considered for an immediate return to Premier League coaching at Arsenal, but he is one of several names to have been thrown into the pot.<\/p>\n

Former Gunners star Merson believes an experienced head needs to be sought in the wake of Emery\u2019s departure, with there a lot of work to be done by a team that have rather lost their way.<\/p>\n

He told the Daily Star: \u201cArsenal\u00a0should go for Mauricio Pochettino or Brendan Rodgers now they\u2019ve finally put Unai Emery out of his misery.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m all for Rodgers getting the job. He\u2019s a proven coach. He improves players \u2013 and these players need to be improved!<\/p>\n

\u201cI like Nuno Espirito Santo at\u00a0Wolves\u00a0as well. And Pochettino is a top manager who is out of work and available. He might be tempted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey just have to make sure they get this appointment right because it\u2019s a crucial decision that will decide Arsenal\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cBut who are the football people making that decision? Where are they are? That\u2019s what worries me. Can you trust them?<\/p>\n

\u201cEmery is probably relieved. He looked lost. I don\u2019t think he knew what he was doing. I think he had lost confidence and was making bad decisions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat was the blueprint he was working to? Were Arsenal a closing down team? No. A counterattacking team? No. The players didn\u2019t know what he wanted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have gone backwards. They face more shots now than they ever did under Arsene Wenger.\u201d<\/p>\n

Merson added on the challenges facing Arsenal and whoever they appoint: \u201cThey\u2019ve got to get back to where they were in the next five years.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I don\u2019t know if they can. Look at the players they have bought the last few years, it\u2019s been shockingly poor. Nicolas Pepe hasn\u2019t looked a \u00a372m signing.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThey needed quality defenders. But they brought in David Luiz. Now, he\u2019s a winner and was a good signing. But he\u2019s not going to shore up your back four.<\/p>\n

\u201cCalum Chambers was playing for Fulham last season. As a defensive midfielder. Now he\u2019s starting every week for Arsenal as a full-back.<\/p>\n
