Julia Gillard, Australia\u2019s first female prime minister,\u00a0says\u00a0that if Hillary Clinton is elected as president of the United States,\u00a0she should be prepared to face down some sincere and severe sexism in office.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, the former\u00a0prime minister gave the keynote address at the #MoreInCommon<\/em> event in London, discussing women in politics and public life.\u00a0Gillard emphasized the harmful effects of online threats against women who pursue power\u2014threats which she said she received daily while prime minister.<\/p>\n

“And of course, as a woman in public life, the violent threats take on another sickening dimension. Threats of violent abuse, of rape, are far too common. A woman in public view may expect to receive them almost daily,\u201d said Gillard.<\/p>\n

The event was held in honor of Jo Cox,\u00a0the British\u00a0Labour MP\u00a0who was killed during her constituency last June as the result of\u00a0firearm and multiple stab wounds\u00a0by a far-right extremist gunman with a history of mental health problems.<\/p>\n

During her speech,\u00a0Gillard said that more women should be encouraged to enter politics despite the obstacles adding,\u00a0\u201cBut \u2026 understand that you will encounter sexism and misogyny and prepare yourself to face it and ultimately to eradicate it,\u201d\u00a0according to The Guardian<\/em>.<\/p>\n

She has been an ardent supporter of Clinton, who she called \u201cthe most qualified and prepared presidential candidate the United States has ever seen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMrs. Clinton should not have to deal with this alone. Every democrat, every republican, every person who believes that women and men are equal should call out any sexism,\u201d wrote Gillard in a New York Times<\/em> op-ed in July.<\/p>\n
