We probably don\u2019t mention it when a prospective employer asks, \u201cWhy do you want to work here?\u201d\u00a0But the obvious reason most of us choose a job (or work at all) is because we need money. Like for food. Or rent. Mainly stuff that allows us\u00a0to stay alive. \u00a0<\/p>\n
So while playing coy and speaking to culture and a \u201cgood fit\u201d might be the more tactful way to answer the question, it shouldn\u2019t come as a shock to an employer that a candidate is very interested in what the job pays.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Unless you\u2019re a company called Skip the Dishes, a food delivery service catering to Midwestern U.S.\u00a0and Canadian cities. The firm was so taken aback by this innocuous and understandable request that they immediately canceled the interview following an applicant\u2019s inquiry about wages and benefits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Understandably upset, she mentioned two news agencies in the tweet to share her story.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The company then issued a follow-up email which suggested that they didn\u2019t explain their position clearly, then elaborated in such a manner that it was clear there was misunderstanding\u2014 their response was as exactly harsh and deluded as it seemed.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Twitter users pointed out the fallacy of criticizing the timing of the request (\u201cat such an early stage\u201d), suggesting it\u2019s far better to discuss compensation early, rather than save the biggest point until the end\u2014possibly wasting everyone\u2019s time if the parties are not able to come to an agreement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The candidate then revealed in a Twitter exchange that this wasn\u2019t even her first interview, but a follow-up after the initial one went well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
As is protocol at this point, the company caught wind of the issue only once it went viral and offered up a pseudo apology and a follow-up.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
