The end of a marriage typically unleashes a flood of emotions including anger, grief, anxiety, and fear. However, former spouses can mitigate some of the stress caused by divorce through cooperation and communication.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A healthy relationship between former spouses also goes a long way towards helping their children after a painful family separation.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A fantastic example of this type of cooperation is the parents of Codie LaChelle McPhate, 32, of Texas. McPhate recently submitted\u00a0a blog post to Love What Matters sharing how her\u00a0father takes the time to help out his ex-wife even though they divorced 28 years ago.<\/p>\n
After all this time, McPhate\u2019s father recently mowed his former spouse\u2019s\u00a0lawn, because she has a bad back and her current husband was out of town. But he didn\u2019t do it to get a pat on the back. \u201cI\u2019m no saint,\u201d McPhate\u2019s father told her.\u00a0<\/p>\n
When McPhate\u2019s younger sibling asked, \u201cWhy is your dad mowing mom\u2019s lawn?\u201d McPhate responded, \u201cBecause, she needed help, and he knew she couldn\u2019t get out here to do it, so he did.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMy dad said he didn\u2019t do this for the recognition,\u201d McPhate wrote in the article. \u201cHe said my mom and he decided when they were going through their divorce they would both choose to be adults and treat each other with respect and compassion.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo matter how their marriage ended, they both loved each other very much at one point, and that, that love \u2013 counts for something,\u201d he continued. \u201cThat if they were going to raise their children to be good, kind people, they needed to be good kind people.\u201d<\/p>\n
McPhate\u2019s story is similar to one\u00a0GOOD shared\u00a0about Billy Flynn in October 2018. The divorced father of two boys went out of his\u00a0way to celebrate his ex-wife\u2019s birthday and had no problem posting about it on Facebook. The post went viral with over 180,000 likes.<\/p>\n
Flynn\u2019s reasoning is simple: \u201cI\u2019m\u00a0raising two little men,\u201d\u00a0Flynn wrote. \u201cThe example I set for how I treat their mom is going to significantly shape how they see and treat women and affect their perception of relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n
