On Thursday night, California state senators voted 23-16 in favor of Senate Bill 30, which\u00a0would blacklist any company\u00a0contracted by the federal government to build a border wall between the United States and Mexico.\u00a0As of 2016, the state\u00a0lay claim to the sixth largest economy in the world, and over\u00a0200,000 jobs there rely on\u00a0commerce, trade, and direct foreign investments from Mexico, according to a\u00a0state assembly report\u00a0on California-Mexico relations. The bill will now move on to the state assembly.<\/p>\n
The author of the bill, Senator Ricardo Lara, said in a statement that, \u201cSenate Bill 30 sends a clear message that we want our businesses to stand with us and support our core values.\u201d<\/p>\n
For filmmaker Al Kamalizad, those core values have a lot to do with one of his favorite Mexican exports: the street taco. Kamalizad says he had a strong reaction to a\u00a0now-infamous warning last fall from Marco Gutierrez, who believed that without a wall,\u00a0\u201cyou’re going to have taco trucks on every corner.\u201d Taco trucks are ubiquitious on street corners in\u00a0the filmmaker\u2019s\u00a0homebase of Los Angeles, he says, so he decided to\u00a0spend one\u00a0night documenting their impact on the city\u2019s culture.\u00a0<\/p>\n
