SA Rugby president Mark Alexander has expressed his sadness at Siya Kolisi’s impending move to Top 14 side Racing 92 but said he understands his decision to leave South Africa.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, the Sharks – where Kolisi currently plies his trade – confirmed that the Springbok skipper will join the Paris-based outfit after the 2023 Rugby World Cup, which will be held in France later this year.<\/p>\n

Make full use of earning potential<\/h3>\n

Alexander feels it’s fair that the game’s elite players make full use of their earning potential and look after their families beyond their playing careers.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s sad to see Siya go,” he told Sport24. “He\u2019s one of the greatest Springbok captains of all time.<\/p>\n

“He\u2019s done wonderful things for the country but how do you tell a person that they can\u2019t go and double or triple what they\u2019re earning now?<\/p>\n

“Older players need to earn the maximum amount of money they can in the shortest possible period.<\/p>\n

“There\u2019s life after rugby and, once they stop playing, people forget you very quickly. And then you\u2019re on your own and you have to live and you have a family to support.<\/p>\n

“I understand why Siya made that decision. But it\u2019s really sad to see him go, as with most of our players who go overseas.”<\/p>\n

Private equity deal could change things<\/h3>\n

Alexander revealed that an imminent SA Rugby private equity deal could open wider revenue possibilities which could allow the governing body to keep their best players in South Africa.<\/p>\n

“Once we can be able to sell our properties in pounds and euros, we can sustain and keep our players here,” he added.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
